Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry Celebrates 130 Years
On June 22, 1896, Drs. Charles Boxton, Thomas Morffew and a group of physicians founded the College of Physicians and Surgeons (P&S) and elected themselves to the Board of Trustees. Boxton became the school’s first dean and Morffew served as president of the dental faculty. That September, the new college leased the Federation Hall building at 818 Howard Street—now the site of Moscone West Convention Center—just a short walk from today’s dental school campus at 155 Fifth Street. After three years, P&S relocated to 344 Fourteenth Street, the second of four homes for the dental school.
